Unit 7: Final Review and Options

Environmental Chemistry.  Everyone will study Environmental Chemistry together.  Use Chemistry: Course Companion Option E as your main guide. Take notes on all presentations and watch all videos.  There will be a section of test on on this option as part of the final exam.

Students who are outside IB testing this May should also study another option of their choice during this unit. Review packets have been distributed.  Thornley has good videos on options A, B, D and F.

During this unit we will also be reviewing as many previous IB SL topics as possible to prepare for the final and for external testing students May 14-15 exams.  The final exam internally will be on two days... Friday May 29th, paper 2 (short answer comprehensive) and environmental option and Monday June 1st paper (multiple choice comprehensive). This is for all IB year two Chemistry students.  Please use your IB study guide as a primary source of review.  There are topic review questions at the end of each chapter.  And use the videos online for quick review as well.  I suggest these Thornley videos in particular, which are on common errors students have made on past IB exams.

Unit 6: Organic

Organic chemistry is usually taught as an entire second year college course. We will be able to spend about a month and a half getting as far into the content as possible.  We will focus on basic molecular structure, nomenclature and reaction mechanisms.  We will do a bonding review first, and then go into the actual IB SL Organic content.
Study Chapter 10 in Chemistry: Course Companion and use the DVD questions for review.  Use Central Chemistry Chapter 25 as a reference as necessary.  Watch the Thornley videos for review but use the Khan channel videos for a more in-depth lesson on each topic.  Organic Chemistry exam on 4/22

Externally TESTING STUDENTS... decide on an additional option topic over break....

Semester 1 Final Exam

During the last few weeks of January we will be reviewing for the first semester final exam and completing design lab work.

The final exam will be over topics 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8.  A review packet will be provided and studied for examples of question types during class time.  The recommended homework is to read and study in your "IB Study Guides: Chemistry for the IB diploma" by Geoffry Neuss and complete all the review questions for the above topics.

Unit 2: Acid Base Measurement Data Processing

This unit will include further study of Acid and Base chemistry with the underlying equilibrium, solution, and reactivity concepts as well.  We will spend about two weeks on this unit and complete two lab practicals.  Both lab practicals will be assessed for data collection/processing (DCP) and conclusion/evaluation (CE) with IB criteria.  These practicals will be the first formal assessment which can eventually be sent into IB for internal moderation (your overall IB grade).  You need to do your best work on these labs and ask for help before turning them in on anything you don't understand.  Once they are turned in you can not work on them further.  This lab practical work is topic 11 for IB.  Acid Base quiz on 10/20
